WORKING WITH MYCELIUM

SPACE FOR BIOMATERIALS

A mycelium workshop with Lina Vieres from Fraunhofer UMSICHT and Julia Krayer from Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences took place at the Bio Lab on 11 November. After an introduction to the basics of sterile laboratory work, the participants focussed on practical work with mycelium, including that of the oyster mushroom. This mushroom is not only suitable as food, but also for the production of mycelium-based materials.
The participating students brought various substrates from home – from sawdust and hay to sand. These were inoculated with the fungus and then placed in the incubator. After just a few days, some of the substrates were well inoculated. The resulting materials were later removed and sterilised.
