In collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Ghana, Folkwang University of the Arts is offering two three-month Artist / Designer-in-Residence scholarships on the themes “Narratives” and “Tech” for Ghanaian artists or designers.
The selected residents will develop their own projects at Folkwang University, which will be presented at Dutch Design Week 2026.

In cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Mexico, we are welcoming two Mexican artists/designers-in-residence from 1 March to 31 May, who will be developing projects in the areas of »Food« and »Textiles«. Emiliano Hernandez Sánchez was selected for the topic of »Food« and Angel Estrada López for the topic of »Textiles«.
Supported by the Goethe-Instituts Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore and Museum Folkwang in Essen we hosted two Indian Designers / Artists at SBYD.SPACE from 15 September to 15 December 2025.
Li Actuallee was selected for the subject of »Textile« and Vinay Khare was selected for the subject of »Tech«. The works created during the residency were presented at the Museum Folkwang in Essen.

Together with the Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa Kyoto and the Museum Folkwang, the first residencies for 2025 were awarded to Yuri Nakai and Masatoshi Noguchi in the subject areas »Repair« and »Food«. Their works developed as part of the residency were presented together with Museum Folkwang at the event »Gutes Klima Festival 2025« taking place at Zeche Carl in Essen.

The residencies for 2024 were awarded to Robert Schnüll, Studio Lapatsch | Unger, and Lilli Malou Weinhold in the subject areas »Bio-based Materials« and »Technology and Sustainability«. The works created during the residency were presented at our »Spaces For Tomorrow« exhibition during Dutch Design Week 2024 in Eindhoven.
