During a workshop, participants made their own brooms or brushes using the hand-tied method. The process was guided by an experienced broom maker from a workshop for the blind, whose craftsmanship sheds light on a perspective that is often overlooked by society. The broom serves as an everyday object with symbolic significance: it represents work that usually only becomes visible when it is no longer being done. As participants work together, an open space emerges for discussion on topics such as the invisibility of care work, gender roles, and social structures.
The project is aimed at both people with personal experiences of care work and those interested in the creative process and collaborative work. In addition to the hands-on craftwork, materials are deliberately chosen—such as scrap wood or natural fibers—to promote sustainable production methods and a greater awareness of materials.
The workshop is intended as a contribution to social and ecological sustainability discourses and raises the question of how we can rethink productivity, value, and living together. At the same time, the project promotes social sustainability by strengthening community, sharing knowledge, and encouraging participants to take action themselves and understand craft processes.
